The main purpose was to build a proof-of-concept Lego WeDo 2.0 car, which could be piloted using my Windows 10 PC. It’s quite a short and shabby project, which a bunch of hacked together items to get it up and going. The integration was easy and used already existing software for the most part. My goal was to control the car with my Logitech F710 game pad, so my boys could find it more like their usual remote control cars.

Elaboration:

For the hardware side, we built a fairly simple car with one driving motor and one steering motor (more motors with WeDo, we cannot do). The WeDo 2.0 smart hub only has 2 ports and therefore could only handle 2 motors, or a motor and a sensor, or 2 sensors. With the regular Lego WeDo 2.0 software, you can control up to 3 Smart Hubs (I think), and therefore 6 motors. However, this only works if you’re using a tablet as the PC/BlueGiga BLED112 dongle only will handle one connection at a time. Anyway, only 2 degrees of freedom are required to pilot a car, so that’s good enough.

A note on the BlueGiga BLED112 dongle: apparently, you need this special dongle to make it work. It’s not quite your normal USB-Bluetooth dongle, as it doesn’t really show up normally on your system in order to connect devices; the devices which have to use it know that they will look for that dongle. I ordered one with the Lego WeDo 2.0 kit, as they recommended, so that’s what I use. Perhaps other Bluetooth 4.0 dongles will work … I don’t know, I didn’t test them. Here’s what it looks like:

I chose the Scratch programming language, because I wanted to see if all of this could be done from the PC… (which it could). You can also use the Lego WeDo 2.0 application if you like, although it’s a bit quirky on the PC (additionally, the Windows 10 version never would download for me from the Microsoft App Store…it kept saying “Problem on our side”. Apparently, they never fixed it either. You can download the Windows 7 version from the Lego Education website. Here, you have to install under a Window 7 profile to make it work (right click on the installation executable–> Properties –> Compatibility –> Compatibility Mode: Run under Windows7)

After installing Scratch, you then need to install the helper application “S2Bot” from PicAxe software: S2Bot 4 Scratch . This enable the connection to the WeDo Smart Hub from Scratch. When installed and running, it looks like this:

Keep this window open, just minimized. If you close it, it will disconnect from the Smart Hub.

Next, you open the Scratch2 desktop application and load the “wedo_2.0_template.sb2” into Scratch. This is most likely located in your “DocumentsScratch Projects” directory on for your user account. After loading, the template, you will have further features enabled in the “More Controls” section:

Now to write some code. Here, I created a simple set of input block to control the forward/backward and left/right movement of the car. These are mapped to keyboard inputs, as the making a direct connection with the F710 game pad is still a bit lacking (to be explained later). Basically, the keys are mapped as:

  • i = forward
  • k = backward
  • j = left
  • l = right (not so intuitive I would guess )
  • f = increase speed by 10
  • s = decrease speed by 10
  • space = stop all motors. This also makes a beep to let you know it’s stopped
  • u = resets speed to minimum and plays a nice simulated ambulance siren (not really useful, but fun)

In the steering setup, I set the motor with the worm gear to turn for 1 second and stop. This was required since the motors don’t have a position control, just a timing control. It’s not a big deal.just that you have to turn them back to correct the steering. During my trials, it seems the system gets confused and sends the same command to the motor even though you said otherwise. For instance, it would often interpret ‘left’ and then ‘right’ (to straighten the wheels), as simply 2 ‘right’ commands. I’m not sure the reason for this.

Next, you can utilize the Logitech F710 controller via the “Joy2Keys” program. This is quite a simple tool: it simply receives inputs from an external controller (mouse, gamepad, etc. ) and injects corresponding keystrokes into the input stream for Scratch. Note: you probably could use another controller, from X-box or the like. However, I opted for the Logitech F710 rather than the PS4 controller, since the Logitech uses it’s own dongle and not the bluetooth for the connection.

After installing the “Joy2Keys” program, connect your game pad and try mapping the keys previously defined in your Scratch program (above). Here’s the mapping that I used:

Minimize the “Joy2Keys” window, but keep it running. To drive the car, click on the green flag in Scratch and start controlling. The speed control could be improved here…right now you have to push the speed and then push the direction control again to make it work. This could be improved through some “broadcast” statements to a universal controller block which would set the speed and direction every time a button was pushed. However, in the next episode…
